Polar Bear

Polar bears are those cool bears in the Coca-Cola commercials. Polar bears are very adaptable to the harsh environment of the arctic. Their fur is thick, but its not their only protection to cold weather. They also have a layer of blubber that insulates their bodies from the freezing air and cold water. Their skin is black helping them to soak up the sun’s rays and keep warm. The fur covering their black skin is transparent and has a hollow core to help reflect the light. This unique fur allows them to blend into their surroundings making it easier to sneak up on seals.

Despite their size and weight, polar bears can swim well. They use their slightly webbed paws like paddles to move through the water. They have been found over 100 kilometers offshore. Even though they are decent swimmers, they are not as quick as the seals they like to eat. When hunting, they tend to stay on the edge of ice or near seal breathing holes. Once they see a seal close by, they will catch it and eat it.
