Waterwheel

Here at Earthling Kids, we know that energy is important. Water is one of the renewable energies that we have learned about. they have been using this form of energy since the 1800s. This week we will make our own waterwheels that have been in use since the 1800s.

Waterwheels are marvels that have been used since the 1800s to help with mills.

Supply List:

  • Plastic Spoons

  • Plastic Cup

  • Scissors

  • Glue or Tape

  • Pen

  • Stick

  • Bucket or Bowl

  • Cup of Water

Instructions:

Set-up:

We recommend using a table cover such as the one in our video during all our crafts. This will protect your workspace. You can get this type of table cover in the party section of most department stores for a couple dollars.

Making the Paddles:

Take one of the plastic spoons and cut off part of the handle.

Please be careful and ask a parent for help.

Making your Watermill:

  1. Take your plastic cup and measure how far apart you want your paddles.

  2. Cut the plastic cup where you want your paddles.

  3. Poke a hole in the bottom of the cup.

  4. Place the spoons in the holes you made for the spoons.

  5. Tape or glue your spoons into place.

  6. Place your stick through the hole on the bottom.

Personalizing your watermill:

  1. Place stickers or draw on the cup or spoons to personalize

  2. To test your watermill, place your stick on the bowl or bucket and pour the water over the spoons.

  3. The water should make the mill move.

Clean up:

  1. Clean up any mess from making and testing your waterwheel.

  2. Wipe down and remove the table cover.
